March 2011

www.worldwatchweb.com- The international chronometry contest has registered entries of 18 pieces produced by watchmaking companies and schools. In 2009, the contest had brought together 16 pieces. The watches will undergo a variety of tests according to international standards. The names of the most accurate timepieces will be announced on October 20 at Château des Monts - Horological Museum of Le Locle.

The watch industry undergoes a dazzling economic success. Concept, design, materials and machining of watches has significantly evolved and are regularly subject to contests and competitions. Accuracy has become an evidence and a condition sine qua non for the sale of the timepiece. Yet it needs legitimacy and credibility. This is why the international chronometry contest, whose results are based on strictly objective criteria, has set itself the goal of establishing a showcase for contemporary mechanical watchmaking. Its partners are the Swiss Society of Chronometry, the Observatory of Besançon, the Official Swiss Control of Chronometers (COSC) and the Haute-Ecole ARC Ingénierie.

The contest is open to mechanical wristwatches with separate classifications for traditional movements and tourbillons, companies on one side and watchmaking schools on the other. Ten companies participate in the 2011 competition and are equally divided between traditional movements and tourbillons. Four schools have taken up the challenge to compare their performance given the same movement.

Measurements will be caried out in officialy certified laboratories in Besançon, Bienne and Le Locle. The watches will undergo magnetism and shocks tests reproducing conditions of everyday use. The Competition’s Committee of Honour is chaired by the astronaut and professor Claude Nicollier. Jean-Marc Triscone, Dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Geneva presides the international jury guaranteeing the scientific and legal regularity of the operations. The Association of the Competition is under the supervision of the Horological Museum of Le Locle.
