In markets of such major importance for fine watchmaking as Asia, there had to be a dedicated event. The brands present at the SIHH took up the challenge with the launch of Watches&Wonders in Hong Kong. The fair, which ran from September 25th to 28th and followed in the same month and at the same venue as the annual Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair, was the first exhibition of its kind ever organised on Asian soil. All the Chief Executives of the participating maisons were present in person to acknowledge the region’s many collectors and connoisseurs.

These four days focused on the specific qualities and characteristics of fine watchmaking, an activity that brings together some forty highly skilled professions. Visitors were able to familiarise themselves with the history of each maison, as well as the techniques that go into producing these extraordinary timepieces.

Informative talks and guided tours of the booths gave further insight into the watchmaking world. Watchmakers, gem-setters and enamellers demonstrated their skills before the public in a specially reserved area. They were joined by watchmakers from the exhibiting maisons who worked at benches inside many of the booths. Meanwhile, an exhibition titled The Mastery of Time traced five centuries of progress in time measurement. The public were thus able to view the timepieces on display in context, and appreciate in full the new collections which the exhibitors took great pleasure in showing.

In its first year, Watches & Wonders has already established itself with a highly successful first edition. Some 16,000 unique visitors, from 750 representatives of the region’s media to retailers, customers and admirers of mechanical mechanisms, came to Hong Kong to see the best in fine watchmaking.
