The Swiss brand unveils an impressive new repertoire of watches at Baselworld. But the new launches are overshadowed by the news that Hublot will also release a smartwatch.

Hublot is on trend once again. Among a new collection that already boasts an impressive use of bold colours (Big Bang Tutti Frutti Linen) and patterns (Big Bang Unico Independent) on its new timepieces, its new all-black concept watch is definitely a “must-have”.

Hublot’s Big Bang Unico Sapphire All Black challenges the distinction between the visible and invisible thanks to the masterful fusion of materials, textures and finishes. The All Black is Black is crafted from blocks of sapphire crystal – sapphire that has been coated with metal – making the exterior of the watch translucent, allowing you to enjoy the construction and movement of the timepiece to the fullest.

But as innovative as Hublot’s new mechanical watches are, they might be overshadowed by the chatter from Baselworld that has the brand releasing a smartwatch, according to Jean-Claude Biver, Chief of LVMH’s watch division.

Following in the footsteps of TAG Heuer – who tried to challenge Apple with its own $1,500 smart watch last year - Hublot will be next in line from the LVMH brands to add smart functions to its watches starting next year.

At the high end of the LVMH watch family, the news of Hublot going “smart” is a bit of a surprise. No doubt the much anticipated smartwatch will be innovative. It will surely be expensive, too.
