The Swiss brand with Cuban roots drops anchor with a flamboyant new timepiece made for the modern-day city pirates.

If the pirates of old wore luxury watches, they’d probably wear something by Cuervo y Sobrinos (CyS). Looking at any of their timepieces, you can’t help but think of secret beaches, sword-fights, long beards and of course buried treasure.

The Torpedo Pirata GMT somehow incorporates a wealth of these details very neatly, without looking completely brazen. The case design, for example, was taken from the shape of a cannon mouth. The fancy lugs – my favourite design component on this watch - represent the curved bow of a ship plundering on the Caribbean Sea.

On the dial – which comes in either black or white – we have sword-shaped hands, and a well-proportioned second time zone and date display at 6 o’clock. Even the crown’s subtle design in the shape of the globe implies there’s no limits to a pirate’s adventures.

Besides the extremely well-designed case and dial, the Torpedo Pirate is also very nicely engineered. This timepiece introduces a novel modular case with interchangeable rings fitted between the case and the bezel. That means the watch can evolve over time by playing with various metals - this GMT version is available in bronze with titanium, or in burnished steel.

Providing the wind in the sails of the Torpedo Pirata GMT is an automatic movement, which is water resistant (only) to 5 ATM. A sapphire crystal case-back reveals the details of the mechanism and an engraving of 2 swords surrounding the classic CyS logo.
