Limes World Heritage

December 2005

The Limes Wall in Germany is one of the world’s largest archeological structures, surpassed in length only by the Great Wall of China. It stretches some 550 km from the Rhine to the Danube. From about 100 until 260 AD, it served as a northern border of the Roman Empire. The remains of this border symbolize, as it were, the culture of Rome, which exerted a significant influence on development in Europe. Architecture, writing, law and language are just a few of the areas that have their roots in Roman culture. Therefore, it is our duty to protect the Limes and pass on its cultural heritage. In July 2005 the Limes was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Limes watches is supporting this effort with a special, limited edition “Limes World Heritage” watch, bringing world-wide attention to the significance of the Limes. Part of the proceeds will support restoration projects on the ancient border line.
