HKTDC confirms large watch and clock participation at BaselWorld 2007

February 2007

Lore Buscher, Regional Director, Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), confirmed on Tuesday that there will be 326 participants from Hong Kong in the Hong Kong Pavilion (Hall 6) at this year’s BaselWorld, 132 of which belong to the watch and clock industry.

The Special Administrative Region (SAR or Hong Kong) is still the second largest exporter of watches and clocks valued at US$ 6,025 millions, a growth of 1.8% in 2006. Exports to China saw an 8% growth and there was a 10.2% increase of US$ 556 millions to Switzerland.

Although Hong Kong is renowned for its private label business, the development of brand name watches is on the increase – Voilà, o.d.m and Latitude to mention just three already established in the European markets - and the HKTDC, with support from the Federation of Hong Kong Watch Trades and Industries and the Hong Kong Manufacturers Association organize regular Brand Name Promotions, primarily directed at the massive Chinese market.

This is the year of the Pig and under this sign business usually booms. Expect, therefore, to see further export and GNP growth in Hong Kong and China.
