Harry Winston’s add gravitas with the Avenue Dual Time Automatic

The new, admittedly masculine timepiece features a powerful and non-traditional design, with an off-center dial and a retrograde indication for a second time zone.

Harry Winston’s signature style for men’s timepieces is embodied in its Avenue Collection. The new Avenue Dual Time Automatic is decisively within the bounds of that collection, featuring a powerful design and a grand presence thanks to a masculine rectangular case measuring 53.80 mm long and 35.80 mm wide. The basic design principles of the collection are all there: strong lines that create a focused look and a central arch that embraces the hand-sewn alligator strap.

But the added gravitas that this watch brings does not come at the cost of added weight and bulk. The brand has made clever use of Zalium, an ultra-light alloy developed by and exclusive to Harry Winston. It allows for very comfortable wear and at the same time defends against scratches.

And to add some warmth to the watch, Harry Winston has used for the first time Sedna gold, giving the timepiece a finer finish. The warmer feel is thanks to a higher proportion of palladium instead of the silver usual in the 18k rose gold alloy. It is what gives the watch a deep, rich luster.

The showpiece of the Avenue Dual Time is its dual faced dial. Its indications are split across two means of display. The main time zone is offset on the right and has two hands under smoked sapphire crystal. A second dial is housed on the left and closer to the crystal, revealing local time. The careful arrangement of vertical openings allows the local time zone’s hands to successively cross these windows, vanishing from one to reappear in the next.

The unique off-center dual time indicators are driven by the impressive caliber HW3502. But despite its added features, a simplified, off-set crown controls all functions. The time is set using a small disc located in the opening at the center of the dial. The second time zone works in a different way. Pulling on the crown removes the red hand from sight. Pushing in the crown, the hand returns to its position.

In many ways, then, the Avenue Dual Time is exactly what we have come to expect and enjoy from Harry Winston watches. It boasts an impressive combination of powerful designs, and unusual yet functional indications, that are aesthetically pleasing and comfortable for everyday wear.
