A 122-year Perpetual Retrograde Moon Phase from Graham

October 2012

The Geo.Graham The Moon model combines a flying tourbillon with a high-precision retrograde moon-phase perpetual function, whose cycle is calculated based on the Moon’s exact synodic period (29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.9 seconds to be precise) for a duration of 122 years. At the end of each synodic period, the retrograde mechanism ensures that the Moon jumps back to the beginning of a new moon-phase cycle, while a double absorber system developed for Graham by Christophe Claret in Le Locle ensures that the 0.07 gramme hand-painted moon is not damaged by the retrograde mechanism. The moon phase display only needs correcting once every 122 years, by a simple push on a corrector.

The G1769 tourbillon movement is coated in blue and adorned with constellations of 45 diamonds (0.24 cts) (flange collar: 11 diamonds, dial: 34 diamonds) such as Camelopardalis, Perseus, Cassiopeia, Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, with the centre of the dial being the North Star’s relative position. It operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of 96 hours.

The sky colour theme continues on the painted sapphire bezel, which features the Milky Way galaxy and contrasts with the 18-carat pink gold case. A sapphire stone on the crown at 3 o’clock provides the perfect finishing touch to this celestial colour scheme. A matching blue crocodile leather strap completes the ensemble. The Geo.Graham The Moon model is a limited edition of only 20 pieces.
