The new series by the independent watchmaker remains true to the brand’s longstanding philosophy of elegant timepieces with smooth lines paired with the famous Century sapphire.

Century has been around for just over a half century by now, having been founded in 1966 by Hans-Ulrich Klingenberg. And as far as independent, and relatively niche brands go, Century has been doing quite well over the years.

Today, the company is based in Nidau, which lies in the heart of Swiss watchmaking, and is headed by Philip W. A. Klingenberg, who is the son of the founder.

To get a better idea about the brand’s philosophy and approach to watchmaking today, look no further than the company’s official name: Century Time Gems. Rather than “timekeepers” or “timepieces”, we have “gems” right in the name, which hints at the gems that the brand is now famous for using in its wristwatches.

The Century sapphire is an example. The second hardest material in the world after diamonds has been used in the brand’s watches year after year, each one polished and sculpted by hand. The gems provide a great display of light, and over the years have become a hallmark of the brand.

This year, we see it used in the Affinity line, a women’s watch delivering a pure and elegant look found within the brand’s Contemporary collection. Forged in steel, the line is a fine example of discreet luxury, featuring the smooth curves of the famed “Megalith” case.

The new watch is available in five different references. What is common to all is the midnight blue lacquered dial, steel case, and quartz movement running the show. Otherwise the watches vary slightly in terms of the design of the bezel, as well as the weight and number of diamonds.

For those interested in a bit more bling, the reference 632.7.U.MB2.14.SK comes packed with 98 diamonds – totaling 0.615 ct. - as well as the brand’s familiar Century sapphire with 36 facets, each cut and polished by hand.

On the other end of the spectrum is the more “modest” reference 632.7.S.MB2.16.SK, which is set with 18 diamonds with a weight of 0.086 ct. and once again featuring a hand cut and polished sapphire.

Among steel watches with steel bracelets, the Affinity is among those that show a rare smoothness and lightness. For those looking for something different, the line is also available in a bold alligator strap option. With either choice, the Affinity looks to be a versatile and elegant watch, day or night.
