Formex Essence 39mm Automatic COSC

This is the first in a series of episodes in which we find out what characterises the independent brand from Biel. Its best-selling model, the Essence 39 mm Automatic COSC, epitomises its values. An introduction.

T

he history of the Swiss watchmaking industry is distinguished by the number of independent brands that have contributed to it in terms of creativity and innovation. Formex is one such brand, founded at the end of the 20th century by two brothers with a passion for both watchmaking and sport.

This dual passion is evident in the models offered by the brand to this day. But it’s not just about design. Innovation is also strong at Formex: if we could only mention one element, it would be the unique case suspension system, which is an integral part of their watches, including in the best-selling Essence collection. The cushion-like system works by incorporating four springs between the upper and lower cases of the watch. The result is the ultimate shock-absorbing system, designed to offer unrivalled comfort to the wearer.

Essence 39 mm Automatic COSC, Formex's bestselling model, comes in a hand-finished stainless steel case with features that noticeably enhance wrist comfort. The brand's distinctive Case Suspension System adjusts to the wearer's movements, while the deployant clasp, equipped with a patented Fine-Adjustment System, allows gradual strap adjustments for a perfect fit throughout the day.

Strength is at the heart of the brand’s identity, since Formex is a contraction of ‘extreme form’, referring to the design and size of the cases of the original models. Since current CEO Raphael Granito took over in 2016, the models have become easier to wear, while adding a significant touch of engineering, a unique choice of materials, a significantly higher quality of finish, higher quality and precision of movement and specially designed features to significantly improve wearing comfort, versatility and functionality.

This capacity to innovate is also due to the brand’s link with Dexel, the company founded by Raphael Granito’s father that supplies elaborate watch components to the high-end Swiss watch industry. Formex, a family business, remains proudly independent. More to come in the next episodes!

Price: CHF 1,350-1,470
