Beyond the wristwatch: the Richard Mille RM S14 Talisman Origine

The brand’s ingenious engineers embarked on a complete deconstruction and reinterpretation of the tonneau-shaped watch case, transforming it into a wearable artefact, an inspired and inspirational talisman. The designs evoke a duality between day and night, as well as geometric patterns reminiscent of Swiss farmhouse roofs.

O

ffered at the Only Watch auction, the RM S14 Talisman Origine stands out in the rich history of the Richard Mille brand, transcending the conventional concept of a wristwatch. It emerges as an homage to Switzerland, celebrating the country’s culture, values and traditions.

This remarkable timepiece, encased in 5N red gold, showcases not only intricate complexity but also eternal beauty, embodying the creative fervour of the developers. The bezel and caseback of the RM S14 bear intricate hand-engraved mystical symbols.

The delicate task of crafting by hand these symbols was entrusted to Pierre-Alain Lozeron, a renowned Swiss engraver who has collaborated with the brand on some of its most extraordinary artistic models, most recently the RM 47 with its golden samurai. The designs evoke a duality between day and night, as well as geometric patterns reminiscent of Swiss farmhouse roofs.

The bezels are securely fastened by fully polished grade 5 titanium claws, which themselves incorporate hand-cut rhodonite elements. There are 16 of these claws, each anchored by spline screws with patterns reminiscent of flowers.

The duality extends throughout the watch, notably with the unconventional crowns flanking the movement. Crafted from gold and polished titanium, the crown at 3 o’clock features a cabochon rhodonite, representing the sun, and serves to set the time and wind the movement. Positioned at 9 o’clock, the strictly ornamental second crown, symbolising the moon, helps balance the overall aesthetic of the timepiece and is capped with a marble stone cabochon.

Like a sacred monument erected to shelter a relic, the case houses an automatic-winding tourbillon calibre, the CRMT5, a masterpiece developed and manufactured in-house by Richard Mille. This movement epitomises mechanical precision with its variable-inertia tourbillon, involute profile gears, and fast-rotating barrel, which together lend the RM S14 exceptional chronometric performance.

This movement is also the symbol of a radical new aesthetic of which only Richard Mille has the secret, with its 5N red gold baseplate and its ultra-skeletonised, micro-blasted and hand-bevelled bridges in 3N red gold. Its woven-canvas-like structure echoes the case’s lines while highlighting the tourbillon, dominated by a grade 5 titanium arch.

The RM S14 is designed to be worn as a pendant around the neck, the first time that Richard Mille has created a necklace. Made of briar wood, red gold, titanium, and rhodonite beads, strung on a metal and rubber cord it has a pressure-adjustable clasp reminiscent of the insert at 6 o’clock that incorporates 5N red gold, polished titanium balls and wood of the same species.

The RM S14 Talisman Origine will be auctioned on November 5th in Geneva as part of the Only Watch event, commencing at 2 pm (CET).

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

IN-HOUSE CALIBRE CRMT5

Skeletonised automatic-winding tourbillon movement with hours, minutes and variable-geometry rotor.

CASE DIMENSIONS

46.77 x 77.25 x 13.10mm

POWER RESERVE

Around 50 hours (± 10 %).

BASEPLATE AND BRIDGES MADE OF GOLD

The baseplate and bridges of the RM S14 are machined from 18K 5N red gold and 18K 3N red yellow respectively, both microblasted and bevelled by hand.

The skeletonised baseplate and bridges were subjected to intensive and complete validation tests to optimise their resistance capacities.

VARIABLE-GEOMETRY ROTOR

  • Heavy outside edge and heavy edge ring in 18K white gold
  • Weight segment in platinum
  • 18K white gold wings
  • Automatic OneWay® winding system in ceramic with ball bearings - Bidirectional winding system

FREE-SPRUNG BALANCE WITH VARIABLE INERTIA

This type of balance wheel represents the ultimate in innovation. It guarantees greater reliability when subjected to shocks and during movement assembly or disassembly, hence better chronometric results over time. The regulator index is eliminated, and a more accurate and repeatable calibration is possible thanks to 4 small, adjustable weights located directly on the balance.

FAST-ROTATING BARREL (5 Hours Per Revolution Instead Of 7.5 Hours)

This type of barrel provides the following advantages:

  • The phenomenon of periodic internal mainspring adhesion is significantly diminished, thereby increasing performance.
  • Provision of an excellent mainspring delta curve with an ideal power reserve/performance and regularity ratio.

GEAR TEETH PROFILE

The entire going train of the watch, the primary transmitter of power throughout the movement, utilises a special profile for the teeth of the wheels that ensures a 20° pressure angle. This system equalises any discrepancies that might arise among the centres of the various wheels, for instance due to thermal changes and normal use, and promotes the smooth transmission of torque to the balance wheel, thus supporting excellent chronometric results.

SPLINE SCREWS IN GRADE 5 TITANIUM FOR THE BRIDGES AND CASE

This permits better control of the torque applied to the screws during assembly. These screws are therefore unaffected by physical manipulation during assembly or disassembly and age well.

  • Movement dimensions: 30.70 x 23.70 mm
  • Thickness: 6.20 mm
  • Jewels: 23
  • Balance: CuBe, 4 arms and 4 setting screws, moment of inertia 7.5 mg•cm2, angle of lift 50o

  • Balance spring: AK3
  • Shock protection: INCABLOC 908.22.211.100 (transparent)

CASE

The design and execution of the watch demonstrates a complete conceptual approach to the movement and the case. As a result, everything has been constructed according to extremely rigorous specifications. It takes a whole series of stamping and machining operations and several days of adjustments to make the three-part case with its curves used for the first time by Richard Mille.

The bezel and the caseback are made from 5N 18K red gold, both satin-brushed with hand-polished rims and hand- engraved symbols.

The caseband is made from grade 5 titanium, integrating claws in grade 5 titanium too, polished and microblasted with swiss rhodonite inserts.

The tripartite case is water resistant to 50 metres ensured by 2 Nitrile O-ring seals. The case is assembled with 20 grade 5 titanium spline screws and abrasion-resistant washers in 316 L stainless steel.
