The winter issue of Europa Star magazine is about to hit the shelves, and we have the exclusive preview for what’s in store for the European and International editions.

Europa Star Europe & International edition No. 5/16

In our special Editorial feature, we learn to dance in the rain, thanks to Editor in Chief Pierre Maillard. Are the fundamentals of watchmaking being challenged? “Yes” is the answer according to Pierre, who argues that watchmaking is confronting a storm these days.

But, thankfully, Pierre also sees the sunny side, and quotes the Greeks of old: “Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about dancing in the rain.”

We then turn to our spotlight on F.P. Journe, a brand that has been proven right by time. The watchmaker focuses on balance, harmony, rigor and legibility, bringing a neo-classical vibe to contemporary watchmaking.

In our Market Focus special, we dissect current trends and focus on three key markets of the industry: Hong Kong, the historical hub of exports for Swiss timepieces; the new challenges faced by the US market; and a report on the Italian market, the primary European destination for Swiss watchmakers.

Then we shift the focus to smartwatches, including everything from A to Z. The bottom line there is that the smart watch market remains somewhat unstable and is in direct competition with quartz watches. Still, a diverse range of offers has sprung up since last year, and we take a look at the situation as it stands now, including a special “Review of smart watches” section.

For those of us with our eyes on the moon, we have a special section on the Louis Moinet lunar model. The feature is complemented by a special section on lunar phase models, including the likes of Patek Philippe, Parmigiani, Cartier, Vacheron Constantin, Hautlence, Frédérique Constant, Harry Winston , A. Lange & Söhne, and more.

And then we shake off the shackles and look at what’s usually an afterthought in watchmaking: watch straps. But with no fewer than 80 manufacturing stages in making a proper watch strap, there’s a lot of room to maneuver within this sector.
