The World’s hardest watch – the Rado V10K developed by the renowned Swiss watch brand Rado – has just been awarded the iF Design Award.CHINA 2005 by an international jury. Decisive factors that contributed towards this success were the clear cut design of the Rado V10K and the technological innovation of the materials used.
Of the nearly 200 products which entered the contest, the Rado V10K became to only watch to have been presented with one of the popular awards.
The winning entries of the iF Design Award contest had to meet high expectations in terms of the following evaluation criteria: Design quality, degree of innovation, choice of materials, technicaland formal independence and functionality.
Awarded by an international jury consisting of renowned design professionals an iF award is also known as a symbol of a company's commitment to innovation.
The Rado V10K is fascinating in many ways. First, the creation of the Rado V10K is a technological milestone in watch history. The abbreviation 'V10K' stands for 10,000 Vickers – the maximum on the hardness scale for materials – and the equivalent to the hardness of natural diamond. After years of research work, Rado engineers succeeded in transforming carbon into nanocrystalline diamond particles and basically make them ‘grow’ onto the watch surface. The result: absolute hardness of 10,000 Vickers and the durability of natural diamond with a coating of 100% High-Tech Diamond on every Rado V10K watch. Furthermore, nothing distracts from the clean cut form of the watch case – not even a crown. The crown has been omitted for reasons of design aesthetics. The time can be easily adjusted on the case back – which is also a technical innovation by Rado - by means of the magnetic contact element that is integrated into the strap.

The remarkable Rado V10K has been awarded various internationally renowned design awards already before: in 2002 the watch received the 'Good Design Award' of the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design (USA) and in 2003 the German Design-Center Nordrhine-Westphalia honoured the Rado V10K with the 'red dot award for outstanding design'.
Rado is the world-wide leader in the production of watches with outstanding design and extremely innovative materials. It was Rado, who launched – as early as 1962 – the world’s first scratchproof watch made of hard-metal. Some twenty years later, the Swiss watch brand was the first one to introduce watches made of scratchproof high-tech ceramics. The ultimate in scratchproof watches was presented by Rado in 2002 when the V10K was launched, the first watch made of High-Tech diamond and thus equally hard and scratchproof as the genuine diamond.
