On and off the tennis court, Roger Federer is the personification of elegance and tradition. So it only makes sense that the Swiss maestro is an ambassador for a brand synonymous with class: Rolex.

That’s not to say that he doesn’t have an open mind. Talking to CNBC, he admitted, “I haven’t felt it or tried it but I’m actually curious to see how it is, and if it’s going to revolutionize watches or not.” Perhaps he was just being polite, as he went on, “I doubt it’s going to have a big impact on the Swiss watch industry… it does tell time, but so does a phone.”

An analogue man in a digital world

Federer was asked about the new Apple Watch for its touted ability to monitor physical activity, arguably of interest to one of the greatest athletes in history. But the current world number two believes that too much data and numbers can blur your mind.

In fact, he doesn’t use any kind of wearable technology. “I don’t quite understand how much you need to know about all of these little things—about how much energy you burn, to how much spin you put on the ball,” he said. “I believe in hard work.” (VJ)
