Hublot’s world first: red ceramic

If the ancient Greeks and Etruscans were around today, they would probably dispute Hublot’s claim that it was the first to create a brightly-coloured ceramic. Such is the danger of a sweeping statement in a press release. But the innovative Swiss brand famous for its art of fusion is undoubtedly the first to produce a brightly-coloured variety of the high-tech, scratch-resistant ceramic used in watchmaking.

The fruit of months of research and experimentation in Hublot’s own in-house foundry (the same that produces the brand’s magic gold), this new bright red ceramic is seen for the first time in the special model produced by the brand for this year’s Only Watch auction, which will be held in Monaco on 28 September this year.

The new ceramic is used for the bezel on a 45mm Classic Fusion case that houses an open-worked tourbillon movement with a five-day power reserve that was developed and manufactured entirely in-house by Hublot. To emphasise the colour of the new bezel, an anodized aluminium ring surrounds the tourbillon carriage at 6 o’clock and contrasting red stitching is used on the black rubber strap.
