Contograf Special Edition, a tribute

One of the reference points for mechanical chronographs, Eberhard & Co. have now added to their chronograph pedigree with a new, striking and sporting look with this vintage-inspired collection.

Eberhard & Co. has a strong history of producing quality chronographs. Its 1960’s Contograf model, for example, was among one of its more iconic designs. It was a precision chronograph with two counters and a large date window at the 6 o’clock position. It also boasted some very innovative characteristics for that time, including a fast-changing date, and a minute counter that was divided into three units and designed to measure the length of a phone call.

In 2014, the Swiss watchmaker launched a re-edition of the 1960s classic. Most of the original features were maintained in the collection, like the minutes counter with the addition of a 3 minutes lapse counter. The date window at 6 o’clock also kept its characteristic trapezoidal shape. The new Contograf, however, was also updated with some innovative details, like its unidirectional ceramic bezel, Chassis bracelet and strap with a deployment clasp.

Through and through, the 2014 re-edition has a very vintage feel about it. And that made perfect sense, since there was little fault to be found with the original model, both in terms of look and performance.

Now, Eberhard & Co. has enriched its classic one more, with a Special Edition model, which is limited to only 99 pieces. The new watch retains all of the technical specs of the previous Contograf, but it represents an aesthetic revolution. It sports a new, daring look characterized by a “camouflage” dial in green tones. While the intense look certainly has a sporty feel about it, the watch would also blend in perfectly with a more sophisticated wardrobe as well.

The recently updated ceramic bezel with unidirectional rotation is available in either dark green or black, and serves as a frame for the tachometer scale, which is inspired by automotive design. Complementing those colour tones, this new edition comes with either a dark green leather strap, a military green fabric strap, or with a Chassis steel bracelet.

As one of the main collections of the Maison, it is easy for a brand to overstretch a certain model and offer endless variations. In this case, Eberhard & Co. has not strayed too far from the design and feel of its classic 1960s Contograf. Even with the updated look and new features, this model is an excellent tribute to the original. So much so, that the watch’s caseback is personalized with the inscription: “Tribute to Contograf – 1960s”.
