Speake-Marin has presented a new watch, called the One & Two. But in fact we actually get two watches available in two different sizes – one in 18k red gold and the other in titanium, and one in a 38mm case and the other in a 42mm option.

The new additions are housed within the J-Class collection, which is arguably the brand’s most classical. And in a first for the J-Class, the watches are equipped with a new in-house movement, the SMA01.

The designers have chosen to fully skeletonize the grey dial to reveal as much of the new movement as possible. Adding to the classic look of the timepieces is the fact that the movement is relatively slim, helped by the fact that the micro automatic rotor is flush with the bridges.

A COSC-certified caliber, it is entirely assembled and adjusted by hand and should bring up to 52 hours of autonomy.

To accommodate the new movement, Speake-Marin has updated its recognizable Piccadilly case. The new case – available in two relatively modest sizes - is more technical than the original. It allows the straps to be better integrated in the case, and the pleated crown has been moved further into the case to provide a smoother silhouette.

Slightly altering the overall look of the watches, the bezel and case back slightly overlap the central case section of the watch. The glass - traditionally set in to the bezel – has been changed to a box form to reduce the overall thickness and give a more technical feel to the package.

On the dial, we don’t see anything in the way of numerals. The Swiss brand’s objective there was to deliver a refined look, which is accentuated by a small seconds indication at 1.30. A unique position for such an indication, this small touch adds balance to the dial when coupled with the aesthetics of the barrel and rotor.

In some ways, then, these timepieces represent a change from other watches of the J-Class collection. But that change is largely at the margins, because the new limited editions remain true to what we’re accustomed to from Speake-Marin.
