The highly regarded watchmaker will launch the new Galet Square Régulateur Black this August. A highly refined and functional timepiece, expect it to move fast.

Swiss watch brand Laurent Ferrier has made a name for itself in a relatively short period of time. Established in 2010, the brand quickly became recognized for its technical abilities and excellent watch designs.

Quick growth over a relatively short period of time in an already ultra competitive industry is never a given. Of course, it helps if the brand founder served as technical director at none other than Patek Philippe for almost four decades.

Now, the brand’s namesake forging his own path. And Laurent Ferrier seems to be doing a good job of it, too. His Galet Classic model, for example, won the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève in the men’s watch category shortly after the brand launched.

And the Galet just happens to be our subject today. Specifically in its latest form, the Galet Square Régulateur Black.

The already iconic model has now been released in a 5N red gold square case with an opaline black nickel dial, a combination that seems to have become a bit of a signature for Laurent Ferrier.

Overall, the design exudes elegance and simplicity. The most important of the three indicators – the large, centrally-positioned hand – displays the minutes. The hours are displayed at 12 o’clock, while below at 6 o’clock we find the seconds sub-dial.

Contrast is provided thanks to the well appointed silver-toned Roman numerals, a railway track ring with four Arabic numerals, and a leaf-shaped hand for the hours, assegai-shaped hand for the minutes, and a baton-shaped hand for the seconds – each in 5N red gold.

The idea behind the regulator concept in timekeeping is to separate the hours and minutes for increased legibility and precision. So as luxurious as this watch is, it remains highly functional as well. The design choice also helps with the excellent balance and clarity of the dial.

Underneath we have the LF Caliber 228.01, an automatic movement sporting a pawl-fitted micro-rotor and delivering a 72-hour power reserve. It is packaged in a 41mm case that is water resistant to 30m and is fitted with sapphire crystals on both the front and back.

The latter is a very welcome addition, which exposes the beautiful movement and its excellent finishing.

The Galet Square Régulateur Black will only become available in August 2018 at select Laurent Ferrier retailers. My assessment is that it will move fast.
