Mühle-Glashütte The 29er Big Bronze Edition 1994

January 2024

Mühle-Glashütte The 29er Big Bronze Edition 1994

The traditional family company is kicking off its anniversary year in style, introducing a sophisticated range of limited-edition models set for release in 2024, starting with the Edition 1994. Just 155 of these special edition watches, encased in bronze, will be made available to timepiece aficionados.

T

he company Nautische Instrumente Mühle-Glashütte has a strong foundation shaped by a history that is both moving and eventful. The current form of the family company was established by Hans-Jürgen Mühle, representing the fourth generation of the Mühle family that began in 1994.

While the company’s name was originally inspired by the manufacture of high-precision marine chronometers, its global popularity is now due to its production of high-quality mechanical wristwatches.

The roots of the independent watch manufacturer based in the German town of Glashütte stretch right back to the year 1869. The birth of the company came when Robert Mühle dared to venture into the world of self-employment and founded his “precision mechanical workshop” for the production of high-precision measuring instruments for the up-and-coming watch industry in Glashütte.

This focus has continued to shape the Mühle family right into the present day. Now in its sixth generation, the family company plays an integral role in the Glashütte watch industry. Since 1996, it has been actively pursuing its passion for time measuring instruments in the form of wristwatches that not only reflect the family tradition of precise measurement but also perfectly embody its nautical virtues of good readability, robustness and precision.

In its anniversary year 2024, the company has not one, but two reasons to celebrate: 155 years of entrepreneurial tradition in Glashütte and, above all, 30 years of Nautische Instrumente Mühle-Glashütte. And what better way to celebrate such an occasion than with a new line, the “Edition 1994”! This brand-new range contains selected Mühle models that will be launched on various occasions throughout the anniversary year.

Each “Edition 1994” will boast its own special anniversary features, for example different elements in stunning Mühle blue – be it the watch face, case components or parts of the minute graduation. To honour the significance of this special year, the number 30 will be highlighted on watches with a date display. The 30 in the minute graduation will also be brought to the forefront. Another, more subtle, highlight concerns the minute numeral 55, which will be replaced by the numeral 155 to pay homage to the founding of the family company by Robert Mühle.

The more restrained design of the 155 as a numeral perfectly reflects the path that Mühle-Glashütte has chosen to navigate in its anniversary year 2024: After celebrating its 150th anniversary with the impressive Robert Mühle Mondphase, the absolute pinnacle of its traditional “Robert Mühle & Sohn” manufacturing line, the independent family company is now focusing its attention on the further development of its nautical and functional wristwatches.

Mühle-Glashütte is launching its “Edition 1994” range with 155 limited-edition models of the 29er Big. These special timepieces feature an anniversary watch face in Mühle blue with the numeral 30 highlighted in red in its minute graduation, whereas in the classic 29er range the 60 is usually marked in red. The model also honours the company’s anniversaries with the aforementioned 155 instead of the numeral 55 and the red 30 in the date display.

In addition, the 29er Big Bronze Edition 1994 particularly stands out due to its impressive 42.4-millimetre-wide case. The middle, bezel and crown of this case are made of aluminium bronze, a popular shipbuilding material due to its freshwater and saltwater-resistant properties. Another feature of this bronze material is the fact that it forms a characteristic patina over time, which in turn protects it against environmental influences. What’s more, the final appearance of this typical patina very much depends on how the watch is worn by its owner, thus making every 29er Big Bronze Edition 1994 a time measuring instrument that is one of a kind.

The back of the watch is made of wearer-friendly stainless steel and features a transparent panel. Wearer-friendliness is also the inspiration behind the watch strap, a blue canvas material with a pad on which the bronze pin buckle rests when the watch is worn.

The bronze case offers pressure resistance of up to 10 bars and reliably protects the SW 200-1 Mühle version automatic movement against seawater and other environmental influences. The movement comes equipped with the efficient Mühle rotor and its shockproof woodpecker neck regulation. These impressive components allow it to be regulated in six different positions and set to ensure accuracy values of between 0 and a maximum of +8 seconds per day. This precision target forms the heart of Mühle’s own regulation standards, which comply with the German chronometer standard, and helps to ensure that the watch never runs slow. After all, no wearer of a Mühle watch should ever be too late because of their time measuring instrument.
