Around Five Odyssey of the Sun: a new sculpture of time

The Swiss R&D atelier introduces a new linear motion clock with the sun as its central element.

A

t the head of a Swiss engineering company active in the watchmaking, aviation, industrial, automotive and medical sectors, Antoine Lorotte decided to partner with designer Philippe Vallat in 2019 to launch Around Five.

The brand has already produced several impressive variations on its “Sculpture of Time”, and now comes with a new clock at the junction of the world of horology, art and interior design: the Odyssey of the Sun.

While its first clocks evoked the course of the sun and its dance with the horizon in an abstract representation, it quickly became obvious that a more literal – or figurative – representation also had its place.

The Odyssey of the Sun’s first version, with a natural brushed aluminium finish, is named “Ulysses” and evokes a simple yet poetic analogy of the precious day of a child. This time around, the sun is the moving element in a world where the horizon is shaped into a “V”, recalling the hands of a watch.

Originally hidden behind this shape, a star rises and reaches its zenith, before finally reuniting with the horizon and taking refuge behind it anew.
