Hamilton takes to the sea and sky

August 2005

The winds of change are taking place at Hamilton. Founded in 1892 in the USA and now a part of the Switzerland’s Swatch Group, a breath of fresh air has taken the brand into what is for them uncharted terrain.

In one fell swoop, Hamilton recently introduced two new watches aimed at simplifying the life of pilots and regatta participants. Both have been developed and designed in-house resulting in a pleasing combination of technical performance and aesthetic styling.

Khaki X-Wing Automatic
The Khaki X-Wing Automatic watch is the world’s first watch with an integrated drift-angle calculator. The watch is designed first and foremost to help pilots calculate and record the crosswinds they encounter during their flight. This is achieved by using the external bezel and key information from either the control tower or from a map concerning the geographic and magnetic poles and wind speeds. Using the nomograph engraved on the reverse side of the watch, the pilot can calculate the speed. With this information, the air speed along with the outer and inner bezels on the watch, the pilot is informed of the direction he has to take to reach the desired destination directly.

This is obviously a highly simplified explanation, but since pilots already understand how to calculate crosswinds from conventional existing instruments – they’ll immediately understand how the timepiece functions. For those who don’t, everything is clearly explained in the documentation.
The watch has a diameter of 44 mm, is in stainless steel and is equipped with an ETA 7750 automatic movement. A black or silver-coloured dial is available, there are day/date apertures at 9 o’clock and the watch comes with a choice of a brown leather or black rubber strap or a stainless steel bracelet.

Khaki Navy Regatta
The Khaki Navy Regatta watch will appeal to sailors and landlubbers alike. A precise direction can be recorded by using the bezel of the watch via the N, E, S, W markings and ‘Port Layline’ and ‘Starboard Layline’, which are indicated in red and green lettering. There are also three chrono discs for the regatta countdown function. On the back of the watch its name is spelt out in the language of naval flags.

Khaki Navy Regatta

The Khaki Navy Regatta is in stainless steel (44 mm) and is equipped with an ETA 7750 automatic movement. The dial is blue, there are day/date apertures at 9 o’clock, either a blue rubber strap or a stainless steel bracelet is available and the watch is water-resistant to 100 metres.

Designed for the professional, the Khaki X-Wing Automatic and the Khaki Navy Regatta will certainly appeal to anyone involved in sailing or flying, those who would like to be and aficionados of handsome technical timepieces.
