Ernie Els presents first Omega Double Eagle Trophy

July 2004

On the first day of the Barclays Scottish Open, OMEGA ambassador Ernie Els presented on 7 July 2004 the first-ever Double Eagle Trophy to Lee Westwood. The Trophy rewards professional golfers for a particularly special feat that can only be achieved with the utmost precision. Representing a score of 3 under par, the Double Eagle is a rare occurrence indeed, since it requires a hole-in-one on a par-4 hole or in two shots on a par-5 hole.

Any professional golfer playing in an official PGA strokeplay tournament who scores a Double Eagle (also known as an albatross) will be presented with the Omega watch that takes its name from this unique achievement: the Constellation Double Eagle chronometer. This prestige timepiece uses Omega’s Co-Axial Escapement movement for excellent long-term accuracy and reliability. The Constellation Double Eagle is available in two different chronometer sizes or as a sporty chronograph version and has a choice of steel and two-tone steel and gold versions with three different dial colours. Each “Double Eagle Trophy” is personalized in a unique way, with the golfer’s name engraved on the watch’s self-winding rotor, which is visible behind a transparent sapphire-crystal case back.

English Ryder Cup player Lee Westwood secured his double eagle with a 224 yard four iron second shot at the ninth hole on Saturday 27 September 2003 during the Dunhill links championship at Kingsbarns in Scotland. This was his final shot in a course record-breaking third round of 62. That stroke, which catapulted Westwood into a 54-hole lead which he did not relinquish, was voted by a panel comprising The European Tour and the golfing media as the best played by a European Tour Member during the month of September.
