US Survey: Online retailers look to “Cyber Monday”

November 2005

“Cyber Monday” has become to Internet retailers what “Black Friday” is to brick-and-mortar stores, as online sales made the Monday after Thanksgiving have escalated in the past several years.

According to a new survey, “Shop.org/BizRate Research 2005 eHoliday Mood” released Monday by the National Retail Federation (NRF), 77 percent of online retailers report their sales increased significantly on the Monday following Thanksgiving. The trend has led many retailers to offer online discounts and promotions specifically for Cyber Monday.

“On Cyber Monday, consumers set their sights on surfing for holiday gifts and shopping online,” said Scott Silverman, executive director of Shop.org, in NRF's release. “This year, online retailers will be capitalizing on the increased traffic by offering special promotions and discounts.”

Fast and secure Internet connections at work could represent one factor in the increased Cyber Monday traffic, according to NRF. Consumers who didn't get to finish their holiday shopping during the weekend also log on to make purchases that Monday, says NRF.

A recent Shop.org survey finds that 37 percent of consumers will use the Internet while at work to browse or buy gifts online this holiday season.
