It jumps, it’s automatic, it’s retrograde … it’s de Grisogono’s FG ONE

There is generally the promise of something different chez de Grisogono, and at this time of the year when the latest watch collections are launched in time for the Spring shows, that promise is always impressively fulfilled … this year by the very different FG ONE.

deGrisogono

Initially the FG ONE surprises by the elongated rectangular form of its case – 58 mm x 33 mm wide. However, the grooved profile created by raised highly-polished ridges that alternate with the pellet-blasted furrows on the front of the case give the illusion of a greater length. The distinctive styling of the case is interrupted by a circular dial for the retrograde minutes hand, the jumping hour indicator and the GMT indicator, accompanied by a semi-circular dial that indicates retrograde seconds and a GMT day/night indicator.
The watchcase is available in four different versions: stainless steel; blackened steel (brilliant and mat PVD in the grooves); a two-tone stainless steel with blackened steel and 18 carat rose gold. Despite its imposing size, the cambered case of the FG ONE and its mobile lugs ensure that it fits snugly onto the wrist.
The dials are in painted black lacquer and the watch is equipped with a base ETA automatic movement completed with a module for the various complications. There are scratch-resistant, anti-glare, cambered sapphire crystals and the watch has a cambered screw-down stainless steel or rose gold caseback engraved with the de Grisogono logo. The FG ONE is water-resistant to 30 metres and is completed with an alligator strap attached to mobile, screw-secured case lugs that adjust to the form of the wrist, and a triple fold-over clasp.

The complications
The originality of the modernistic case is also matched by the originality of the FG ONE’s complications. The round dominant dial features a retrograde display of the minutes in a 230º arc using a Dauphine-style hand and a jumping hour indicator, with its instantaneous-change jump mechanism, that is located directly beneath the 30 minute Arabic numeral situated at what is normally the 12 o’clock position. A broader aperture at the 6 o’clock position indicates the second time zone display using a coloured Arabic numeral that is driven by a progressive hour change mechanism. The retrograde seconds are indicated by a Dauphine-style hand that moves across a 120º arc in the lower semi-circular dial, alongside a round aperture with day/night indication for the second time zone. The crown is placed discretely behind the strap at 12 o’clock.
The FG ONE, named after Fawaz Gruosi, the founder, designer and inspiration behind the de Grisogono brand, is quite unique in its styling and offers an aesthetic, contemporary geometrical look that assertively contrasts with more classic watch forms. Elegant with a subtle touch of sportiness, the FG ONE is a welcome addition to the exciting stable of timepieces that make up the highly original collections already created by de Grisogono.
