Diamond Industry Prepares For ‘The Blood Diamond’ movie release

June 2006

An IGI Certificate of Authenticity can alleviate consumer concerns regarding the origin of their diamonds.

As the buzz continues to heighten around the anticipated release of the movie ‘The Blood Diamond’, directed by Edward Zwick and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Connolly, consumers will want assurance their diamonds are conflict free. The International Gemological Institute (IGI) has been authenticating diamonds for years and can dispel consumer fears regarding the origin of their diamonds.

IGI’s Certificate of Authenticity not only authenticates one’s diamond but also states it is in full compliance with the Kimberley Process. Attestation of the diamond’s origin and the ability to track the diamond is documented by IGI and signed by the submitter, who is responsible for maintaining a database tracking system for each submitted diamond. An IGI LaserscribeSM* inscription appears on the diamond depicting the IGI report number.

An IGI Certificate of Authenticity assures consumers their diamonds were responsibly mined and ethically sourced and traded from the origin of the diamonds to the retail marketplace making them ‘conflict free’.

IGI has for years issued verifiable documentation regarding the origin of Canadian diamonds, and now offers verifiable documentation for the origin of all diamonds. Two of IGI’s primary goals are to ensure piece of mind to the consumer and help safeguard this industry’s reputation by doing everything to further the gemmological community.

IGI is a consumer-focused gemmological laboratory that provides independent, objective and accurate grading, identification and appraisal reports for gemstones and fine jewellery. IGI does not buy or sell diamonds, gemstones or fine jewellery; it is an unbiased and neutral organization, consisting of graduate gemmologists and accredited gem and jewellery appraisers.

IGI is the only worldwide laboratory that has earned International Organization for Standards (ISO) accreditation in five countries – US, Canada, India, the United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong. In order to maintain ISO accreditation, each of IGI’s labs must be audited annually.

The International Gemological Institute, the world’s largest independent laboratory for testing and valuating gemstones and fine jewellery, was established in 1975 and is located in Antwerp, New York City, Mumbai (Bombay), Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Toronto, Bangkok, Tokyo and Dubai.
