Sotheby's London to show George Daniels' watches

July 2006

To celebrate watchmaker George Daniels' 80th birthday, Sotheby's and antique watch dealer Bobinet will offer an exhibit of Daniels' watches.

The exhibit will take place at Sotheby's New Bond Street location in London, July 18-23.

The display will include every watch Daniels created in his 60-year career. It will feature 36 pieces on loan from collectors around the world. Sotheby's estimates the total cost of the pieces at more than $9 million.

Daniels began his horology career in 1949. He completed his first watch, a pivoted-detent chronometer tourbillon in 1968. That piece, created for his friend Cecil Sam Clutton, will go on display at the Sotheby's retrospective.

The show will also include two “Space Traveller” pocket watches, which display solar, mean and sidereal time.

Part of the retrospective will focus on the co-axial escapement Daniels developed in the 1970s. It will feature the first pocket watch to incorporate this movement. That piece, purchased by American collector Esmond Bradley Martin in 1983, sold at auction in 2002 for $317,500. In addition to watches, the exhibit will offer sketches, drawings and videos.
