CPSC recalls dive watches

March 2007

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a voluntary recall of two watches by Pelagic, following reports that the watches can “lock up” and give divers faulty information.

The CPSC reports that when performing a switch from one gas to another during a dive, the computer display on the watches can lock up and not return to the main dive screen that displays dive times. This could cause divers to enter decompression unknowingly or to ascend prematurely, which could lead to decompression sickness, according to the CPSC.

Pelagic has not received any reports of injuries due to the defect.

The Oceanic ATOM 2.0 dive watch (above) and the AERIS EPIC dive watch (below) have been recalled by the CPSC for computer displays that can lock up and give divers faulty information.

The recall involves Oceanic-brand ATOM 2.0 dive watches with serial numbers 1 through 2,079 and AERIS-brand EPIC dive watches with serial numbers 1 through 712.

The CPSC advises consumers to discontinue using the watches and take them back to an authorized Oceanic or AERIS dealer for a free software upgrade.

“It's not a huge deal, but I definitely want people to get them in for the update,” says Ron Landess, service manager for Oceanic, Pelagic's distributor. “Their local authorized dealers can do the update, and it only takes about three minutes.”
