First Fabergé Boutique opens in Sydney

September 2007

As of September, Sydney boasts a further attraction: a Fabergé Boutique has opened at 19 Castlereagh Street – one of the top addresses in the metropolis. This is one of the first Fabergé Boutiques to open worldwide since the closure of all stores in the aftermath of the October Revolution of 1917.

Since September 1 they grace shop windows once again: the double-headed, crowned eagle – the coat of arms of the Romanovs – with the characteristic trademarkФ, the Cyrillic F. The initial of the purveyor to the Russian court flanks the entrance to what is probably the most luxurious jeweller's shop in the New World.

The interior of the Fabergé Boutique in the elegant Art Deco building follows the style prevalent in the aristocratic St Petersburg of the 19th century.
Proprietor and operator of the Fabergé Boutique is the Australian jeweller Fairfax & Roberts, the oldest and best-known jewellery dynasty in Australia, founded in Sydney in 1858.
The venerable Australian company commissioned the design for the sales area from the architect Maddalena Vienna, with the symmetry of the shop floor tailored precisely to the classical historic building.

“The house of Fairfax & Roberts fulfils all requirements that a jeweller is obliged to satisfy for a Boutique: tradition and class,” says Dr Marcus O. Mohr, Managing Director of the jewellery manufacturer Victor Mayer GmbH & Co. KG and President of FABERGÉ Jewellery & Watches at the opening of the Boutique in Sydney.

The unusual quality of its jewels and the adherence to traditional production techniques led to the Victor Mayer company, based in Pforzheim, Germany, being appointed sole authorised Workmaster of Fabergé, in 1990. As an exclusively authorised jewellery manufacturer, only Victor Mayer is permitted to create objects that are allowed to bear the Fabergé stamp – now in Latin letters. Adjacent to this is the “VM” stamp of Victor Mayer. The creations of Victor Mayer can already be found in museums around the world.
