Platinum and Diamonds

August 2003

It is one of the greatest love stories of our time. It is about two special people, irresistibly attracted to one another because they are made for one another: The talk is of platinum and diamonds, brought together through the desire to achieve that certain something. Platinum, woken by the diamond&Mac245;s kiss, has only been made into jewellery for about a century. Previously unrecognised for thousands of years, man was not able turn it into jewellery until the end of the 19th century. The legendary Louis Cartier was one of the first to use its unique features to set diamonds in filigree way and, thanks to the special features of platinum, at the same time achieved a stability. With this the liaison was founded. This partnership of convenience turned into true love: platinum, white with its bright shimmer, is able to kindle the valuable fire of the precious stone like no other metal.
The precious coupling are the most valuable attribute known to man. Platinum and diamonds are the most precious treasures on earth. They hide themselves in the deepest crevices and behind impenetrable rocks. At first glance both are inconspicuous, the diamond requires expert grinding to become a gleaming star, platinum requires a special separating process from ore to present itself in its true beauty. And each metal represents a superlative: Platinum is the most valuable, most precious and most rare of all metals, the diamond the greatest, hardest and most sparkling of all stones. Both are viewed as the most beautiful and exceptional of their kind, the epitome of something special, able to speak volumes without words. And because the world is fascinated by such great love stories, it rediscovers platinum and diamonds again and again. The latest trend is the connection between impressively large diamonds, which are gloriously set as solitaires in platinum, decorating the hands, necks or ears of elegant ladies.
Platinum and diamonds make the most perfect couple ? often imitated but never achieved. White metals do their best to simulate the gleam of platinum; other stones try to get close to the sparkle of diamonds in tired facets ? in vain. Platinum and diamonds are unique. The gleam of platinum meets the white sparkle and they melt together to become the most beautiful expression of luxury and consistency, of feeling, aesthetics and glamour.
