Swiss jewelry in Hong Kong: Peter Baer goes East

July 2003

When Swiss-born jeweler Peter Baer came to Hong Kong in 1988, the circumstances were perfect. Pairing his lifelong love for jade with his penchant for nature-inspired designs, he went to work creating unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. His shop is located in Hong Kong's Central district, where he caters to a growing international clientele who come to him for dramatic, yet versatile jewelry in jade, gemstones, pearls and diamonds. Most of his pieces are convertible. Drops can be removed from earrings, creating day-into-night looks. Intricately carved jade pendants are hinged so they can be worn back to front, front to back, displaying the varied colors of the natural stone. A series of bold clips in white gold and pavÉ diamonds can be worn as pins or necklace clips, depending on the wearer's mood. Most dramatic of all are the brooches: oversized fantasies of multicolored sapphires, tsavorites, rubies and topaz fashioned into leaves, flowers and insects.
