Ruby Slippers: 21st Century Style

June 2003

Forget Dorothy's maryjanes. These are dance-all-night stiletto-heeled sandals designed by Stuart Weitzman - with a little help from Oscar Heyman Bros. - who collaborated on the design of the Burma Ruby shoes for the 2003 Academy Awards event. On that score, there is the bad news and good news. The shoes remained unworn, due to the lack of red carpet at the Oscars and the overall somber mood of the times. The good news, for some lucky well-heeled woman, is the opportunity to own these $1.2 million sparklers. This one-of-a-kind footwear is light on the feet, but heavy on the gemstones. They are laced with 642 Burma rubies weighing 123.33 carats, plus a half-pound of platinum for the settings. The shoes have been designed with a choice of four different soles and Weitzman has agreed to personally fit them to the owner's foot. After leaving Hollywood, the ruby slippers traveled to Basel where they were on exhibit at the Platinum Guild stand. After that, they went to Harrods in London, the Couture show, then it is on to Tokyo and other prestigious pit stops. Like Dorothy's ruby slippers, these Oscar Heyman/Stuart Weitzman shoes provide their own type of magic. With their purchase, a sizeable donation will be made to the customer's favorite charity.
