New Old Designs by YDS/Japan

June 2003

Japanese designer Yoshio Ishikawa has tapped into his historical roots, using an ancient lacquering technique to produce jewelry of multiple colors and textures. Wajima-nuri, a secret handmade lacquering process perfected by artisans in the city of Wajima, was originally introduced during the 15th century. It produces deeply colored lacquer decorated with accents of handpainted gold leaf. Ishikawa's Bon Chic collection features a range of lacquered designs, ranging from bold brooches with traditional dragons, leaves and symbolic images to modern designs of pearls and gold with just an accent of lacquer. The designer also offers non-lacquer designs, incorporating multicolored mixtures of colored gemstones, diamonds and gold. Yoshio Design Studio, Yamanashi, Japan.
