Prix Golay 2003: “Pearls to Play!”

May 2003

The Prix Golay contest is a unique occasion to discover original and often surprising pieces of jewelry, created by young goldsmiths and their untamed imagination. This year's theme inspired a high number of fascinating designs.

The annual contest of jewelry creation is organized and sponsored by Golay, a Swiss-based leader in the worldwide pearl trade, to encourage young talents. It is open to students and apprentices preparing their exams to obtain the Swiss Federal Diploma as a goldsmith. Their four-year courses cover jewelry design as well as the goldsmith's technical know-how. They enter the contest by submitting first their concepts and drawings, and then the finished jewelry creations, all personally designed and crafted.

This year's theme is “Pearls to Play!”. Participants received seven cultured pearls, one South Sea and six freshwater, to create an ornament that is also a game. The high level of innovation and craftsmanship in the creations promise a bright future to Swiss jewelry design.

The members of the jury are confirmed experts in jewelry, fashion and design. A notary assures a perfectly anonymous submission of the pieces and the contest regulations define the key criteria of evaluation. Within this given framework, the jury's professional competence and subjective judgement attribute the prizes for the most outstanding creations.

All the pieces entered in the contest were seen at the World Watch and Jewellery Show in Basel, where the award ceremony took place. They are now presented at various exhibitions throughout the year, as well as on the website www.golay.com.
