Antwerp Diamond High Council Awards 2003

June 2002

Antwerp, June 2002 - Every two year, HRD organises a diamond jewellery contest for talented diamond jewellery designers. The first “Antwerp Diamond Council Award” was granted in 1984. The competition is to enhance creativity and design excellence in contemporary diamond jewellery. The 2003 edition will for the first time be open to candidates from over the world.

With this new formula Antwerp's HRD wants to reach an international public of qualified jewellery designers, without affecting the original concept, that focuses on the creation of a “unique and original diamond jewel” characterised by creativity, originality and ingenuity.

The contest offers a forum to designers to present and promote their jewels. The competition is free and open to all professional and non-professional jewellery designers, students, gold-and silversmiths and designers in general.

The 2003 theme is “movement(s)”. Only original diamond jewel(s), specially designed for the competition, can be submitted. Diamond should be the hero of the creation. The design must be innovative. All kinds of metals and materials are permitted. Precious stones can be used. The contest is free of charge.

Pre-selection is based upon drawings, photos or a maquette. For the pre-selection only 2-D items will be accepted. The jury will judge the entries (drawings) based on the following criteria: design, creativity, aesthetic quality, wear ability and craftsmanship.

Qualified entrants, successfully passing the preliminary contest have to create the actual jewellery piece. An international jury of experts will judge the diamond jewellery pieces for the final selection. The judges will be looking for excellence, will reward innovation, enthusiasm and craftsmanship.

The winner of the competition will be awarded with 5 000 Euro. All the laureates will benefit from an international promotion. The jewellery pieces will be exhibited on several occasions in Belgium and during international diamond events. After one year the jewels will be returned to the laureates.
