The return of the Gefica Safari

Gérald Genta presented the first Gefica watch in 1988. Born from a discussion during a Big Five game hunt in Africa, the name stems from the merging of the first two letters of the friends’ surnames – Geoffroy, Fissore and Canali.

The case of the new Gefica Safari is made from an alloy of bronze and titanium, giving the watch a unique character that develops a special patina over time. The use of bronze in the original version was to avoid reflections, to give the hunter a sort of invisibility in the African savannah. The two rows of titanium beads around the middle of the case and the crown, echo the body painting and the geometrical shapes represented in African tribal art and the natural hues recall nature.

The watch is equipped with an exclusive bi-retro Manufacture-made self-winding Calibre GG 1004 movement with an 18 carat gold rotor. There are jumping hours in an aperture at 12 o’clock, a graduated 180° retrograde minute segment in the upper part of the dial between 9 and 3 o’clock, a 180° retrograde date segment between 5 and 7 o’clock and a central seconds hand. There is a 45-hour power reserve and a hollowed multi-layer dial with a sandblast finish, Art deco-inspired hour, minute and date numerals, openwork hands (Gefica), a sapphire crystal front and back, triple-folding titanium clasp on an alligator strap. The watch is water-resistant to 100 metres.
The Gefica Safari Biretro Bronze was originally designed for the safari hunt, but today’s man is an urban predator, who ideally seeks to protect nature. Nevertheless, the harmony of the bronze and titanium alloy should create a liaison between contemporary man and his materials with the primeval flora, fauna and earth of Africa.
