Dunhill – British style and Swiss technology

“It is not enough to expect a man to pay for the best, you must also give him what he paid for.” Alfred Dunhill

Alfred Dunhill was certainly a man with insight. He took over his family’s horse and saddle business in 1887 at a time when driving motorcars was becoming the most glamorous of past times. He developed a line of motoring accessories including a dashboard clock that went on to seduce modern gentlemen the world over. When the company expanded into other men’s items, it created a variety of pocket watches, cigarette lighter watches, belts with concealed timepieces, and more recently, a key watch that can be custom made to match the client’s own key.
Famous patrons have included the stylish Duke of Windsor, Winston Churchill, Cary Grant and Pablo Picasso, all of whom have enjoyed the elegance and functionality of dunhill’s men’s accessories.

This year, in celebration of the company’s timekeeping heritage, dunhill is launching a new line of men’s wristwatches entitled The Classic Collection. These simple, and yet el-egant 38mm timepieces are inspired by the original Speedograph dashboard clock, a flyback chronograph, accurate to one tenth of a second, that adorned motorcars at the turn of the last century.
The case of the new Classic timepiece is available in rose gold or stainless steel with the choice of a mat black alligator strap or a matching bracelet. Under the refreshingly simple, silver-coloured, guilloché dial hides a Jaeger-LeCoultre 896-dato mechanical movement indicating the hours, minutes, small seconds and date. The use of such a first-rate movement attests to dunhill’s commitment to using quality components throughout its product ranges.

Dunhill

This isn’t the first time that dunhill has worked together with Jaeger-LeCoultre as they had also collaborated during the 1950s and 1960s. Since both Dunhill and Jaeger-LeCoultre are now part of the Richemont Group (acquired in 1988 and 2000 respectively), this partnership makes a perfect match.
At an attractive US$ 5,500 for the steel version and around US$ 10,500 for the gold version, dunhill’s new Classic timepiece proves that the company continues to respect the words of its founder, which is good news for dunhill retailers everywhere.
