The legendary Cartier boutique at 13 rue de la Paix in Paris provided the backdrop for the final scene of Grace of Monaco, a film by French director Olivier Dahan which is to open the next Festival de Cannes on Wednesday.

The shoot concluded a key scene in the film, in which a pink-hatted Princess Grace (played by Nicole Kidman) sparkles in Cartier jewellery as she announces to the press that she is giving up her Hollywood career to dedicate herself to her family and royal obligations.

As a devoted client, Grace Kelly, later Princess Grace of Monaco, maintained a loyal relationship with the French jeweller in Paris and Monaco.
Cartier created the 10.47-carat emerald-cut diamond engagement ring which she was given by Prince Rainier III in 1956.
Moreover, for her wedding she received numerous gifts of Cartier jewellery, such as a diamond and ruby tiara and a necklace composed of three strands of diamonds.

The filming of the movie naturally called for Cartier’s expertise.
Faithful reproductions of five of these royal jewellery pieces were produced in the ateliers of the Maison, with the consent of the Sovereign House of Monaco. The original creations are part of the royal jewels of Monaco.

Spanish actress Paz Vega plays the role of Maria Callas. She wears contemporary Cartier creations: a platinum necklace of pearls, diamonds and emeralds; white gold pendant earrings of diamonds, onyx and emeralds; a Panthère ring in emeralds, onyx and diamonds, and a white gold diamond bracelet.

In addition to these historical reproductions, Cartier lent the production team a number of contemporary high jewellery pieces worn by Nicole Kidman throughout the movie, as well as a spectacular emerald necklace seen on Spanish actress Paz Vega, who plays Maria Callas in the film.

Cartier watches and accessories are worn by the male leads, Prince Rainier III embodied by Tim Roth, and Aristotle Onassis played by Robert Lindsay.
