With almost two centuries in the business, Wolf is a leader in the winders and jewellery boxes space. How have they managed to do well for so long?

Wolf was established in 1834 by German silversmith Philipp Wolf, when he realized that his silver pieces sold more when presented in beautiful boxes. Since, the company has been in the hands of the same family for 183 years and has devoted its attention to making beautiful watch winders and jewellery boxes.

While the company’s heritage has deep roots, they have not been a regular fixture at European shows like Baselworld. Yet readers from North America and Asia might well be familiar with Wolf already, as the company has channeled its attention to those markets over the last 25 years.

Now, the company is again focusing on conquering the UK and European markets. This year they had a strong showing at Basel, where Wolf presented not just storage solutions for watches but also a way to control the winder modules of their cases by using an app.

At the time of writing the company boasts eight different collections of watch winders and five jewellery box collections.

For example, the Blossom collection is all about springtime and femininity, with its 3D flowers hand crafted in leather. The collection has five different jewellery cases each in the seasonal palette.

One of the brand’s most popular cases is the Caroline Zip Travel case. It takes the shape of a true classic that incorporates stitched quilted leather on the outside and suede lining on the inside. Six different cases are available in either rose quartz, ivory, black, or red.

I’m a fan of the more classic Roadster watch winder, which is inspired by the luxurious wood dashboard of vintage luxury cars. As with all of their winders, the Roadster is sharp looking and meticulously engineered. It includes a black pebble faux leather backlit LCD display, an ebony macassar wood veneer face plate and chrome finished hardware.

The winding mechanism also allows for different settings, including speed (between 300 and 1200 turns per day) and rotations (clockwise, counter clockwise and bi-directional).

Of course, those with a growing smartwatch collection wouldn’t have all that much use for a storage box with winders. In response to the growing smartwatch market, &bnsp;Wolf has also developed storage solutions for Apple Watch fans.

That includes the Watch Valet with Strap Tray, which has 10 compartments for storing different straps, as well as a port to charge an iPhone and a docking station to charge the Apple Watch.

There is also the 6 Piece Watch Box with Strap Tray for those that have a mix of mechanical and smartwatches. It comes with 5 compartments for traditional watches and includes an Apple Watch charging station inside the box with 6 compartments for watch straps.

Wolf’s winders have all the functionality any watch aficionado might need, which is even more so now that the company has started experimenting with smartwatch cases and even mobile apps to control their winder’s functions remotely.

That shows a company that has been passed by from generation to generation yet is still open to adapt and change with the times, as silversmith Philipp Wolf himself did in the 1834.
