De Bethune DB28GS JPS: a new automotive-inspired timepiece

The Swiss manufacture launches a new version of its first ever sports watch with a black and gold twist, as an echo to the John Player Special racing cars.

e all remember well the DB28GS Grand Bleu launched by De Bethune in 2019: a new chapter began for the brand then with this technical and elegant diver’s watch, its first sports timepiece ever.

The brand is now introducing a new version of the DB28GS, a limited edition of 50 pieces, as a tribute to the John Player Special (JPS) Lotus Team that dominated the F1 world in the 1970s with its famed black-and-gold livery.

Master watchmaker Denis Flageollet, an outdoor sports enthusiast, felt the need to create a sporty diving watch combining technical and aesthetic refinement. This is how the DB28GS was born. Its latest iteration is a tribute to the John Player Special (JPS) racing cars reproducing their black and gold livery.

Besides these special features, the main elements of the watch remain as powerful as in the previous iterations of the series: the DB2080 calibre with central seconds and a five-day power reserve indicated on the dial; water resistance to over 100 metres; a different bezel that rotates with the crystal to indicate dive times; a 44mm case with a black zirconium case middle (“Microlight” decoration), brushed and hand polished grade 5 titanium caseback and bezel, a crown at 12 o’clock and above all the patented system of floating lugs that adapt to wrist size and movements.

Particular emphasis has been put on readability, including in the darkest depths, thanks to an ingenious lighting system inside the movement, produced entirely mechanically by a miniature dynamo principle.
