atches have been part of space missions since the early 1960s, worn on astronaut wrists as trusted tools in places where precision isn’t optional. Over the decades, a handful of brands earned the right to call their watches space-ready, putting them through the International Space Station, or even through Spacewalks. The watches could typically withstand extreme temperature variations, shock, and changes in atmospheric pressure. While many have attempted, only a few have made it to the league.
Bangalore Watch Company has been pushing the envelope for high-quality watchmaking in India since 2018. With watches using aluminum from fighter planes, hardened steel from aircraft carriers, a proprietary material of steel and fusion called Cerasteel™, and the use of rare Meteorites, the brand has established a brand narrative that built on a thorough technical foundation.
The Apogee® collection was launched in 2021 as a nod to Space. Made of the fusion material called Cerasteel™, the watch pushes the surface hardness rating to 9H on the Mohs scale.
In 2024, the Apogee® took a giant leap – embarking on a Stratospheric flight on a High-Altitude Balloon – launched from a small spaceport in the United Kingdom, the watch withstood extreme temperatures going to –60 degrees Celsius, extreme shock upon re-entry to Earth, and worked flawlessly without case condensation or timekeeping issues throughout the 4-hour Spaceflight.
Aptly named, the Karman Line, this project has secured Bangalore Watch Company’s ticket into the small league of watches that have actually been qualified for Near-Earth Spaceflights.
