Behrens Inventor Collection Pupil Ultralight: ancient geometry, modern lightness

Behrens reinterprets the eye motifs of ancient Shu artefacts through jumping hours and an unconventional mechanical layout. Offered in titanium or graphene composite, the Pupil Ultralight combines this cultural starting point with a slim case and remarkably low weight.

ehrens looks to the ancient Shu civilisation for the geometry of its Inventor collection watch. The Pupil Ultralight takes its cues from the Bronze Diamond Eye associated with Sanxingdui, translating a rhomboid form into the arrangement of its movement and indications.

The reference becomes most apparent in the hour and minute hands. Moving over a meteorite chapter ring, their shapes converge and separate, periodically reconstructing the eye motif. The hour indication jumps as the minute hand completes its rotation, giving this visual interplay a mechanical rhythm.

The hour and minute hands periodically align to recreate an eye-shaped motif inspired by Sanxingdui artefacts. A meteorite chapter ring frames their changing geometry, while the jumping-hour mechanism gives the display its distinctive cadence.

A day-night display at the lower left draws on the Sun and Immortal Birds gold ornament, while a power-reserve indicator occupies the upper left. These functions are driven by the BM09, a manually wound manufacture calibre comprising 265 components. It operates at 4Hz and provides 45 hours of power reserve.

Material choices support the unusually slender construction. The Hu-shaped case measures 34 x 39.6mm, with a thickness of 5.15mm in Grade 5 titanium and 5.65mm in the graphene composite version. Weight, without the strap, is approximately 14g and 8g respectively.

Four titanium colourways form the regular offering. Two graphene composite editions incorporate gold or platinum leaf into a matte grey base, each limited to nine pieces. Quick-release fluororubber straps complete the watches.

Price: US$ 9,200 (titanium) / US$ 33,800 (graphene composite)
