The panache of Asymmetry

May 2005

Take an oblong, swivel it on its axis, add that inimitable Cartier touch and voilà, you have a classic.

Cartier has an established ‘look’ and no matter what is created within its traditional design parameters, the resulting timepiece looks as if it is a time-honoured classic. The new asymmetric watch from the brand’s Cartier Libre Collection is no different.

Cartier

The basic oblong case is conventional, but then it’s given a tilt and you have what Cartier call an asymmetric watch. Asymmetry actually means a lack of beauty or harmony of form … something that is misproportioned … but when you look at this timepiece it has total harmony. The only truly asymmetric element is the dial and the manner in which the Roman numerals have been partially concealed.
The watchcase is in 18 carat yellow gold and is set with round diamonds and the dial is in grained silver. The watch is equipped with a quartz movement, has a hidden crown and it comes with either a wide beige or a black toile poudrée (a glossy toile) strap with a diamond-set deployant buckle.
Cartier has taken poetic licence with the conventional form and created a beautifully elegant and eye-catching watch that is clearly destined to become yet another classic in its already much admired repertoire.
