Communiqué : BASELWORLD 2006

January 2006

The World Watch and Jewellery Show BASELWORLD will run from 30 March to 6 April 2006 in Basel. As the world's biggest and most important showcase for the industry, BASELWORLD is the ideal place for conducting business and networking. BASELWORLD is the industry highlight of the year in an environ-ment of increasing worldwide demand for luxury goods.

Market analysts recommend buying shares in the largest companies in the luxury goods industry, against a background of increasing worldwide demand for luxury goods. The industry is showing a resilience which impresses many experts, with the sector increasing its global sales by over five percent last year. Expectations are even higher this year with BASELWORLD consolidating its position in this highly buoyant environment, as the largest and most important showcase for the industries involved. Over 2,100 exhibitors from the watch and jewellery industries in 45 countries will display their latest collections and product ranges in 160,000 m2 of space. Many exhibiting companies will again have an exclusive presence at BASELWORLD.

“First Avenue”: a reflection of market penetration

Changes in the infrastructure have made the construction of multi-storey stands possible on the new “First Avenue” in the Hall of Visions (Hall 2.2) for the first time. This has created a unique showcase for the world-famous luxury brands in this Hall. The newly conceived “First Avenue” is designed to reflect the increasing overlap in market penetration within the watch and jewellery industries. “First Avenue” provides a forum for the growing importance of creating and presen-ting luxurious high-fashion watches by traditional jewellery brands, thereby adding a valuable new dimension to BASELWORLD. Show Director, Sylvie Ritter, is convinced that an impressive, exclusive ambiance for the presentation of new collections, has now been created in this Hall, stating: ““First Avenue” will provide the ideal quality environment for exhibiting brands. It also gives us the opportunity to respond to previous requests from exhibitors for a comprehensive re-design of the Hall’s infrastructure.”
As all the established watchmakers will be exhibiting at BASELWORLD, the Show will once again supply a valuable stimulus to the watch and jewellery trade this year.
Sylvie Ritter continues: “This development consolidates BASELWORLD’s position as the global meeting point for the luxury goods industry and custodian of quality standards.”

A new newspaper: BASELWORLD DAILY NEWS

This year, the Show’s management is launching the event’s own daily newspaper, the BASELWORLD DAILY NEWS. This is intended to provide approximately 90,000 visitors from all over the world with an up to date, attractive information medium. This publication will give visitors, exhibitors and journalists a day-by-day summary of highlights, innovations, trends and events. The material will also feature every-thing of importance about the individual parts of the Show, including the international markets. A first-class team of trade journalists and editors with experience in the luxury goods industry will be respon-sible for the content of the BASELWORLD DAILY NEWS. The Show’s management is convinced that this daily newspaper will make a major contribution to the success of BASELWORLD and ensure that a visit is as worthwhile and informative as possible.

Free visas for BASELWORLD visitors, for the first time

The Swiss authorities have developed something new this year for BASELWORLD visitors who require a visa for Switzerland. This new initiative gives Swiss Consulates the authority to issue visas free of charge. As a result, for the first time, the fee for applying for and granting a visa is being waived for visitors to the global event for watches and jewellery. By doing this, the authorities are highlighting the importance of BASELWORLD to Switzerland and, particularly, to its exporters - namely the watch, jewellery and precision engineering industries present in Basel.
