On November 9th 2011, the “Hallmark of Geneva” will be celebrating its 125th anniversary. An authentic symbol of the quality of Genevan Fine Watchmaking, the “Hallmark” represents an internationally recognised standard of excellence. Building on its prestigious history, it is now entering a new era marked by renewal and by a determination to usher this certification firmly into the modern age.

To protect Geneva’s reputation for excellence, and in response to a request from the “Association des Horlogers”, the Grand Council of the Republic and Canton of Geneva set up an office for the voluntary control of watches on November 6th 1886.

Rigorous criteria are applied to the quality of movement construction and production; and manufacturers must prove that their legal headquarters as well as their assembly and rating workshops are indeed located in Genevan territory in order to obtain this label.

As in the past, earning the honour of placing the “Hallmark of Geneva” on their watches implies that manufacturers must constantly fine-tune all the parts composing their base calibres. These components must demonstrate their perfect efficiency and guarantee high precision, while perpetuating hand-crafted skills.

Although it has undergone certain technical modifications over the decades, it has never wavered from the original spirit of perfection that remains a powerful token of quality and authenticity.

While the “Hallmark of Geneva” has progressively adapted to several evolutions, it will now be taking on a whole new dimension. All will be revealed in November 9th to coincide with the anniversary date.
