Gold watches

September 2000

Gold watches are showing a dazzling recovery

Is the crushing domination of steel going to lose its lustre in favour of a glittering return to gold? Well, perhaps not. However, we are witnessing a dual trend in the marketplace today. Steel is holding its own but at the same time, gold is making a shimmering comeback, especially the white variety.
Statistics for Swiss watch exports for the first two months of 2000 are very indicative. The value of gold timepieces has increased 12,2% over the same period of the previous year, while the volume has increased even more significantly, i.e. up 18,5%. As for steel pieces, they are up 27,7% by value and 13,3% by volume.
Gold's return to favour is also confirmed by the very positive results reported by brands present at the spring fairs held in Basel and Geneva. Fine timepieces, especially those from prestige names and equipped with a sophisticated mechanical movement, met with considerable success. It seems that we are well on the road to a very bright year in watchmaking.
