Summer with the ICE smart junior 3.0 Find My

For a few years now, Ice-Watch has focused on a segment that traditional brands tend to overlook: children’s watches. We tested one of the latest models, which is also the first to include a location tracker without a SIM card.

“T

his is my special watch! It’s for big sisters and I’m biggest so I can use it!” This summer, we gave our young daughter one of Ice-Watch’s specially designed children’s models. Apart from shamelessly taunting her little brother, her reactions were, as you might expect, a mixture of surprise and delight: “Look, mummy, when it does that, it means it’s 10 o’clock!” Telling the time was certainly a favourite feature (as was the game where she had to steer a car round obstacles).

The watch itself is completely intuitive: we had it set up even before we had the time (or patience) to sit down and read the manual. Children love the digital screen with its multiple options (for use in moderation, like any screen). For parents, however, who are naturally anxious, the main attraction is the location tracking function.

A Belgian brand specialising in affordable watches, over the past few years Ice-Watch has introduced models designed specifically for children (we wrote more about this segment here). What sets the ICE smart junior 3.0 Find My apart is that it can be geo-located with Apple, without a SIM card or paid subscription.

Available as four models with bright colours and entertaining designs, the watch can be instantly located, by kids or parents, on an Apple device using Apple’s Find My technology. If the watch hasn’t strayed too far, it will be picked up by an iPhone’s Bluetooth connection and made to play a sound.

If it’s further away, it can still be located by the Find My network of over a billion iPhones, iPads and Macs all over the world. Devices within range securely upload the lost item’s location to iCloud, which you can then see on the app. Data is anonymous and encrypted for complete confidentiality.

As well as this new feature, the watch has many other functionalities that encourage children to be active and stay healthy, such as a pedometer, an activity monitor and fun challenges. It has an AMOLED screen and a 5- to 7-day battery life. Priced at €99, the ICE smart junior 3.0 Find My comes in Blue, Pink White, Light Blue and Purple Soft-blue colourways.

Ice-Watch recently introduced the same location tracking technology in the round watches in its ICE find collections, in six colours, with a quartz movement, polyamide case, 3 ATM water-resistance and a hypoallergenic silicon strap that fits wrists up to 34.5mm, with a longer strap on the White gold and Black gold versions.
