Tribute to Doris Maillard (1927-2020)

Doris Maillard-Buchser peacefully left us on 7 June 2020 at the age of 92. She was the daughter of Hugo Buchser, the founder of our publishing house. Born in 1927, the year Europa Star was created, she has directly contributed to the company’s development and accompanied her father in horological journeys around the world.

B

orn in 1927 – also the year of the company’s birth in Geneva – she was the mother of Philippe and Pierre Maillard, current managing director and editor-in-chief of Europa Star, and the grandmother of Serge Maillard, publisher.

For several years, Doris accompanied her father as a private secretary on his horological trips around the world. One of her most vibrant memories was their crossing to South America on a transatlantic liner in the 1940s, where Hugo Buchser founded several watch magazines in Portuguese and Spanish (such as Elegância e Precisão in Brazil and Estrella del Sur in Argentina, the “ancestors” of today’s Europa Star magazine).

The wife of Gilbert Maillard, who ran our publishing house from the 1960s to the 1990s, she was particularly keen to see the company founded by her father remain in the family. And she was delighted with the many initiatives taken in recent years to revive the company’s heritage, including the digitisation of Europa Star’s archives.
