German Watch Museum Glashütte: a new foyer exhibition for the 200 years of Moritz Grossmann

One of the pioneers of the Glashütte watch industry and founder of the German School of Watchmaking Glashütte, Moritz Grossmann was born 200 years ago on 27 March. This new exhibition at the German Watch Museum Glashütte was designed in cooperation with today’s Glashütte-based watch manufacturer Grossmann Uhren GmbH, which revived the long-established Moritz Grossmann brand in 2008 and has since been producing high-quality timepieces under this name once again.

A

new foyer exhibition is on display at the German Watch Museum Glashütte. It is dedicated to one of the pioneers of the Glashütte watch industry and founder of the German School of Watchmaking Glashütte, Moritz Grossmann, who was born 200 years ago on 27 March.

The exhibition was designed in cooperation with today’s Glashütte- based watch manufacturer Grossmann Uhren GmbH, which revived the long-established Moritz Grossmann brand in 2008 and has since been producing high-quality timepieces under this name once again.

The exhibition begins by introducing Moritz Grossmann (1826–1885), a figure who exerted a wide-ranging influence on the watchmaking industry. As a qualified watchmaker, he founded one of the first watchmaking workshops in Glashütte around the turn of the year 1854/55. He recognised early on the importance of a sound technical education.

It is thanks to his initiative that the watchmaking apprenticeship was continuously developed, ultimately leading to the founding of the German School of Watchmaking in Glashütte in 1878, where he himself also worked as a teacher.

Furthermore, Grossmann gained recognition as a specialist author and local politician. A detailed presentation on the life and work of Moritz Grossmann will be on display from the end of June 2026 in the new special exhibition at the German Watch Museum in Glashütte.

Drawing on the history of the historic Moritz Grossmann company, the newly opened foyer exhibition bridges the gap to the present day. Grossmann Uhren GmbH was founded in 2008, thereby reviving this brand steeped in tradition.

Through exhibits, displays and films, the exhibition highlights the roots and influences behind the current collection and the corporate philosophy of the Moritz Grossmann manufactory.

The foyer exhibition is now open to the public free of charge during the regular opening hours of the German Watch Museum in Glashütte, Wednesday to Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm.
