Delbana celebrates 90 years with the new Recordmaster

This year, Delbana proudly celebrates 90 years of independent watchmaking. For this significant milestone for the brand active in the “affordable luxury” range, they set out to create a new series of quintessential automatic timepieces inspired by Delbana’s history under the name of an enduring classic, the Recordmaster. Originally introduced as a men’s model in the 1950s, the new version is fitting for both women and men.

W

hen the Delbana Recordmaster was originally released in the 1950s, advancements in vinyl records had a profound impact on the music industry and society. This method of recording and transmitting sound has been replaced by continuously evolving audio formats but remains a nostalgic and cherished part the brand’s history.

Likewise, the Fifties and Sixties represent a prime moment in Delbana’s history. Production reached an all-time high, distribution was thriving globally, and some of the brand’s most innovative models to date were introduced. Emphasis remained on producing accessible Swiss Made timepieces while profound advancements in the watch industry such as hammer-winding movements were popularized. Contemporary technology and trends served as inspiration for Delbana’s new models as with the coveted Long Play Record for the Recordmaster.

True to the original, the design of the new Recordmaster is characterized by a series of stepped black microgrooves which mimic the texture of a vinyl record and serve as a backdrop for applied arrowhead indexes and retro Arabic numerals. The perimeter of the dial is further appointed with a minute track containing oversized circular luminous hour markers that provide a whimsical touch and remind of sheet music and notes while the center of the dial is detailed with a delicate silver guilloche pattern.

The Recordmaster possesses cathedral shaped, luminous minute and hour hands and a striking, red central seconds hand. A vintage Delbana logo recalls the classic inspiration while the addition of the date at 3 o’clock adds a further design element and convenience. The ridged crown is engraved with the Delbana tower and solidifies the well-proportioned design.

At 40 mm in diameter, the size of the new model is slightly larger than those of the past while practical and comfortable for daily wear. The polished stainless steel surfaces of the case and clasp give it a modern yet classic appearance. The mechanical movement recalls Delbana’s early pieces, before quartz was introduced, and is visible through a transparent case back to allow the user to experience the unmistakable quality of an automatic Swiss Made timepiece.

The renewed Recordmaster collection represents Delbana’s heritage and future as it sets a new standard for the brand’s affordable automatic timepieces. As the owners state, “we are proud to have 90 years of history that enable us to cherish and revive past models while we continue to embrace innovation and advancements to make every moment count.”

Delbana History

Delbana was founded in 1931 in Grenchen, Switzerland by Goliardo Della Balda, an Italian visionary from the hilltop city of San Marino. From the onset, the company prioritized high-quality and fashionable timepieces that were also affordable.

Building upon its foundation in distinctive pocket watches, Delbana’s mechanical wristwatches saw great success throughout the 50’s and 60’s. Following the arrival of the quartz movement, Delbana strengthened its dedication to affordable style and began manufacturing quartz timepieces with the same commitment to distinctive Swiss Made design and craftsmanship.

In 2001 Delbana merged with Delma Watch Ltd. and is now based in Lengnau, Switzerland with Goliardo’s grandson, Daniel Kessler still part of the company. The brands represent over 170 years of combined family-owned watch manufacturing expertise at a range of levels for ladies and gentlemen. Today’s Delbana watches reflect the essence of its history with a contemporary original approach to classic, sophisticated and luxurious timepieces offered at affordable prices.
