Voutilainen 28 MPR

Embodying the Voutilainen philosophy of precision, longevity, and innovation rooted in classical watchmaking, the calibre Vingt-8 and its escapement stands as a landmark in the workshop’s history.

A

s of 31 st December 2025, orders for this movement and its related models closed, marking the end of an era. Introduced in 2008, the Vingt-8 has since become an icon of independent watchmaking, celebrated for its perfect balance between exceptional finishing, technical refinement, and deep respect for horological tradition.

Paying tribute to this legacy, the Voutilainen workshop unveils the 28MPR, featuring a striking moonphase complication and a new 37.5mm case. The timepiece, offered in three limited editions of 15 pieces each in steel, platinum and titanium, will be the ultimate edition of the legendary calibre Vingt-8.

The dial reflects the extraordinary heritage of hand-guilloché, each pattern engraved with meticulous care and dexterity. This time-honoured technique enhances light and texture, transforming the watch into a living testament to exceptional horological artistry.

In technical terms, the 28MPR features a power reserve indication combined with a moonphase complication that is adjustable by simply pressing the crown inwards. This poetic function enriches the movement’s architecture while preserving the purity and harmony that have defined the Voutilainen Vingt-8 since its inception.

Celebrating another remarkable “métier d’art”, the lunar disc is adorned with blue Grand Feu enamel, upon which the celestial body is delicately hand-painted with enamel pigments . Crafted for the first time entirely in-house by the artisans of Brodbeck Guillochage, it embodies both technical mastery and poetic artistry.

This ancestral savoir-faire involves applying multiple layers of finely ground enamel onto a gold base, each layer meticulously fired at high temperatures (800 –900 °C) to vitrify the enamel and achieve a rich, luminous colour. After successive firings, the surface is hand -polished to create a radiant finish. The result is a moonphase display of exceptional depth and translucency, combined with timeless elegance. Countless hours are required to perform this ancestral know-how.

The mechanism has been designed, built, fabricated, hand-finished and assembled within the workshop with the utmost precision, care and passion. It features a very large balance wheel crafted in-house, allowing a perfect regulation of the watch within strict tolerances. Additionally, a rare and unique balance-spring system has been used. The exterior of the spring has a typical Phillips overcoil, while the internal curve uses the little-known Grossmann curve further increasing accuracy.

The 28MPR movement is also distinguished by its two escapement wheels, which provide a direct impulse to the balance through the roller/jewel. This innovative construction improves efficiency by requiring less energy than the Swiss lever escapement and allows for notable benefits, for everyday use, such as longevity, stability and a longer power reserve.

The sapphire case back reveals the intricacies of the calibre, meticulously finished to the highest standards by the expert artisans of the Voutilainen workshop. The surfaces of pinions and wheels are completely flat and polished with exceptionally uniform tolerances. The main plate and bridges, made from German-silver, are decorated by ha nd to achieve the utmost levels of surface finish. Screws and all steel parts are also finished and polished by hand.

Housed in a redesigned 37.5 mm case featuring a concave bezel and straight lugs, the 28MPR timepiece offers enhanced comfort and visual harmony. It is paired with an elegant hand-sewn strap. It can also be personalized to reflect the wishes of its owner, making each piece truly unique.
